Ripped off by Madison Property Management?
All the gory details
I moved out of my apartment in August. Two weeks later, MPM had sent a check with $350 deducted from the security deposit.
They included itemized repairs for half a dozen items — all of which were already “broken” when I moved in. Like the knob on the stove with the numbers worn off and then written on with a magic-marker. Or the missing cover on the bare ceiling bulb in the bedroom.
Now, when I moved into the apartment, I had signed a lease with Apex Property Management. I hadn't bothered to detail all the minor imperfections — imperfections that always seem to come with older, cheaper apartments — because Apex, unlike MPM, is not known for being bottom-feeding scumbags.
They also charged me $80 for cleaning the apartment, when I had spent hours leaving it impeccably clean. Luckily I took photos before I left, so we can see exactly how much the inside of the refrigerator needed cleaning.
From the stories I've heard, this is standard practice for MPM. And why not? I'm sure many former renters decide it's easier not to argue while MPM takes half the security deposit.
